Singapore Curry Puff Chain Old Chang Kee to open first Europe outlet in London’s Covent Garden

The popular Singapore snack chain will make its European debut in London this year.

Foodies in London can look forward to bite into a crisp Hainanese-style curry puff very soon.

Singapore snack chain Old Chang Kee will open its debut outlet in London in the popular shopping enclave of Covent Garden in the West End later this year.

The 300 sq ft casual dining restaurant will be fashioned after a typical kopitiam and adorned with old-school Singaporean paraphernalia.

The star of the menu will undoubtedly be the chain’s signature curry puffs. The fried golden brown parcels are stuffed with hearty spiced potato, egg and meat filling that is encased in a crusty pastry.

Homesick Singaporeans will also have more reasons to cheer about: Singapore chicken curry, laksa, nasi lemak and other finger food will also be on the menu.

Ms Leong, Old Chang Kee UK’s director, says: “Our curry puffs have a rich heritage as early ‘fusion food’, and we are thrilled to bring them back to Britain along with the very best of our snacks and meals. Last year, we hosted a weekend pop-up in Kentish Town to whet Londoners' appetites and we sold out in four hours each day. It was a such an exciting introduction to one of Europe’s most popular cities.”

About 1,200 curry puffs were sold in the two-day pop-up event. At the pop-up, the price of a curry puff started at £2 (S$3.60) and the curry chicken rice set was £6.

Old Chang Kee has roots as a humble curry puff stall near Rex Cinemas in Mackenzie Road in 1956. In 1986, it was bought over by Mr Han Keen Juan, who has expanded the brand to more than 70 outlets in Singapore, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia.

In Singapore, it has rolled out novel flavours of curry puffs including sambal seafood, chicken kopi and most recently, nasi lemak chicken.

Old Chang Kee's London flagship store will be at 15A New Row in Covent Garden.
