2025 marks an important milestone as the MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang enters its third year, with our Inspectors continuing to delve into this treasure trove of culinary potential.
We are pleased to see that an increasing number of international MICHELIN-Starred restaurants are choosing to branch out here, and this year, two new establishments have successfully earned their Stars, Chim By Chef Noom and Molina, which have both received One MICHELIN Star.
As more international chefs and local young chefs return to Malaysia, they bring in a new vitality and creativity to traditional cuisine. The number of newly added restaurants has significantly increased this year, especially since we have 12 new Bib Gourmand establishments in our selection, and the diversity of cuisines has expanded. This not only affirms the local culinary culture but also lays a solid foundation for future development.
During this year's exploration, particularly in Penang, our Inspectors experienced the charm of traditional cuisine, especially the uniqueness of Nyonya dishes. The local restaurants each boast their own distinctive character, preserving family secret recipes that not only offer a delightful culinary experience but also serve as a continuation of cultural heritage.
This year, we have also added several affordable street food options to the Kuala Lumpur & Penang Bib Gourmand selection, many of which are family-run local cuisine spots that have been passed down through generations. They adhere to traditional recipes and cooking methods, effectively preserving both the cultural significance of the food and the history of their families, which is incredibly valuable. This also reflects the high cost-performance ratio of the local tourism market.
Additionally, we are excited to welcome the destination's first-ever Green Star restaurant — Dewakan — this year, which has made significant contributions to promoting local ingredients and sustainable dining practices, setting a positive example for the industry. This establishment showcases the potential of local ingredients and promotes sustainability, injecting new energy into the local dining scene. These changes not only reflect the thriving nature of the market but also signal a brighter future for Malaysian cuisine.
This year promises to be an exhilarating one for Malaysian cuisine as tradition and innovation continue. It’s clear that Malaysian cuisine is in the midst of a renaissance. From the preservation of treasured family recipes to the embrace of sustainability and innovation, the culinary landscape here is more vibrant than ever. With a growing diversity of establishments and a commitment to honouring tradition while embracing the future, Malaysia’s food scene is poised to captivate the world. This year’s selection not only celebrates the rich tapestry of flavours but also sets the stage for an even more exciting culinary journey ahead.
Expect to discover bold reimagining of classic dishes, the revival of cherished family recipes, and a deeper emphasis on sustainable dining. Whether it’s savouring authentic street food or experiencing the artistry of fine dining, Malaysian cuisine this year is set to inspire and delight like never before.
