2018 MICHELIN Guide Shanghai Launched

Ultraviolet joins T’ang Court in the highest three-star echelon; 30 restaurants get Michelin stars this year, up from 26 in 2017.

The results for 2018 MICHELIN Guide Shanghai were announced in a press conference today. This is the Guide’s second year in Shanghai following the inaugural edition in 2017.

This year, 30 of Shanghai’s restaurants were awarded the coveted stars, up from 26 last year, while another 27 were awarded the Bib Gourmand.

Notably, Paul Pairet’s cutting-edge Ultraviolet has made the leap to three stars from two last year. He says: "It's truly unexpected. I was not sure that Michelin agreed with our very special format, but I am very happy and glad for our team." T’ang Court in luxury hotel The Langham retains its three-star status.

All the restaurants awarded two stars last year retain their stars in 2018. They are 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, Canton 8, Yi Long Court, YongFoo Elite and Imperial Treasure.

The four new additions to the guide are Bo Shanghai, Dashu Wujie, Jean-Georges and Yongfu, with one Michelin star each. You can now expect a long waiting list for celebrity chef Alvin Leung’s Bo Shanghai which sits just 10 diners at a time. Many were surprised when Jean-Georges, a three-starred establishment in New York, did not get a star in last year’s guide; they’ve made the cut this year. Yongfu is known for its authentic Ningbo cuisine made with the best seasonal ingredients while well-loved vegetarian chain restaurant Dashu Wujie gets a star for its outlet on the Bund.

A Bib Gourmand recommendation goes to eateries that offer a good value meal for under RMB200 (HKD$237). This year's Bib Gourmand list includes three new ones: Hao Sheng, which offers Shanghai cuisine, Le Patio & La Famille (Julu Road) which serves Hangzhou cuisine, and Tandoor, a restaurant serving Indian specialties.

"Shanghai is a city that is developing fast and has real gastronomic potential thanks to the dynamism of the growing hotel and restaurant sector," comments Michael Ellis, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. "The standard of the local cuisine is steadily increasing while the chefs are developing their creativity and giving free rein to their audacity - much to the delight of a local clientele that is ever more curious to discover new flavours and different experiences."
