The 857 eateries listed in this year’s guidebook represent all five of the city’s boroughs and 63 cuisines from around the globe.

Michelin has unveiled its highly respected star selections for the 2017 edition of the Michelin Guide New York

The 857 eateries listed in this year’s guidebook - the 12th since Michelin started publishing in the city - represent all five of the city’s boroughs and 63 cuisines from around the globe.

Among the newly starred restaurants is Aska in Brooklyn, which earns two stars for the first time after renovating and relocating to a more spacious and larger kitchen under the watch of head chef Frederik Berselius, who delivers contemporary cooking with Scandinavian influences.

In the ultimate three-star category, Cesar Ramirez’s Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare, Daniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Jean-Georges, Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin, Masa Takayama’s Masaand Thomas Keller’s Per Se all retained their vaunted status.

Among the 12 new eateries that have gained one stars in the new guidebook are Chelsea’s La Sirena by celebrity chef Mario Batali and Ushiwakamaru, which relocated to Chelsea last year and brought veteran Chef Hideo Kuribara and his team’s supreme sushi with it.

The guidebook also recognised a Michelin-starred restaurant in Harlem for the first time in the form of Sushi Inoue, by Nagasaki–native and legendary sushi chef, Chef Shinichi Inoue.

Across town, Greenwich Village also gained three one-star newcomers: Gunter Seeger NY, Nix, and Sushi Zo, while long-celebrated sushi restaurant Kanonyama in East Village and Contra in Lower East Side also earned their first stars.

Edouard Michelin, the great grandson of a founding brother of the same name, said: “A New York guide is part of an old dream of mine. It goes back 20 years. At first there was France, then Europe, but now there's the world, and New York is the gateway. New York makes you discover other cuisines."

A total of 77 New York restaurants received a coveted Michelin star rating in the 2017 guidebook, along with 28 Bib Gourmand restaurants. The latter category recognises restaurants that serve two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (without tax and gratuity)

To fete the launch of this year’s guide, Michelin celebrated with a special “Star Celebration” on the eve of the guide’s market introduction. The private event saw Michelin-recognized chefs and restaurateurs mingle among food press and other special guests, along with several exclusive and high-end sponsors.

New York is one of four cities in the U.S. where Michelin publishes an annual guide. The others include Chicago, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
