Unlike other capitals in the world that are known for their hustle and bustle, Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi, located in the North, appeals more to those in search of laid-back vibes, as it teems with charming small shops and eateries. Meanwhile, its big sister next to the Mekong delta in the south, Ho Chi Minh City, is fast-paced and rapidly growing yet still exuding the many cultures that have enriched and influenced its communities over the generations.
Both cities can seem frantic at times, so you’ll need your wits to navigate through the hectic traffic, but if you are looking to explore quaint alleys and side streets off the beaten track busy with local life, you’ve come to the right place.
Here is our lowdown on must-try street eats you can find along the enchanting alleys of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from MICHELIN Guide Inspectors.
1946 Cua Bac, Hanoi (Bib Gourmand, MICHELIN Guide Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City 2023)
Hidden in an alley on Cửa Bắc Road, the location is not conspicuous, but the restaurant’s exterior is very eye-catching with its yellow and green frontage. Serving a range of authentic Vietnamese dishes, the portions are huge, the ingredients are well prepared, the seasonings are right, and the dishes are delicious. There are many diners here, and it is often full. Reservations are recommended.
Phở Minh, Ho Chi Minh City (Bib Gourmand, MICHELIN Guide Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City 2023)
For over 70 years, this small shop has been serving traditional pho. Tucked away in a narrow alley with no signage outside, it's a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The menu offers a selection of pho with tenderloin beef, beef brisket, and mixed beef, in small or large bowls. The pho is served with a side of herbs, lime, sprouts, and chillies, allowing customers to season their dish to their liking. For those who want to try a bit of everything, a large bowl of mixed beef pho is recommended. Aside from the pho, the freshly baked pâté chaud is also a must-try. The shop is only open in the morning, so it's best to wake up early to enjoy this delicious food. Despite its humble appearance, the shop has a rich history and is a testament to the enduring popularity of traditional pho.
Senté (Nguyen Quang Bich Street), Hanoi (Recommended, MICHELIN Guide Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City 2023)
This restaurant is in the old quarter area, away from the bustling streets. The entrance is in a small alley, so you might miss it if you do not pay attention. Offering a modern Vietnamese fusion menu based on the humble lotus plant, most dishes feature its flowers, leaves, seeds, stems, and roots. All dishes are beautifully presented, artistically combining ingredients and flavours.
Xới Cơm, Hanoi (Bib Gourmand, MICHELIN Guide Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City 2023)
For a taste of what Northern Vietnamese home cooking is like, this is the place to go. This restaurant is in an alley, and the interior decor imitates Hanoi homes of the 1980s and 1990s, full of retro flair. The menu offers a selection of the days. Each dish may seem simple, but every bite is delicious and full of home-made flavours. And the prices are very affordable.
