MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Housed on a quaint street, 1789 is classic Georgetown—think wooden beams, antiques and fireplaces all nestled inside a historic, Federal period townhouse. The restaurant's six dining rooms, each with their own layout and décor, are spread across three floors and packed with a global, multi-generational crowd. The mood is definitely special occasion, and the menu bows to that by sticking with what works: straightforward, seasonal and carefully curated American fare. Maryland crab fondue set over silky mashed potatoes and topped with uni is winningly simple; while wonderfully moist duck breast is dressed up with a foie gras truffle for a luxe garnish. Coconut milk cream with passion fruit crèmeux is that ideal yin and yang of sweet and tart.
