The Dolomites are home to lodges of all descriptions, from quaint old wooden contraptions to ultra-modern eco-lodges. But there’s nothing else quite like the Gardena Grödnerhof Gourmet & Spa Hotel. Constructed in 1923, it’s about as ornate as these things can be; a 21st-century restoration left its majestic silhouette intact, even as it updated its color palette and its interior finishes.
Its 58 rooms and suites contain plenty of classic Alpine gestures, like exposed timbers and panels of knotty pine. They’re also equipped with modern furniture and up-to-date comforts, as well as balconies with views of the town and the valley.
The village of Ortisei, in the Val Gardena, is nothing if not picturesque, and offers easy access to the Dolomiti Superski area. In summer, the region offers a wealth of trails for hiking and biking. And travelers in any season benefit from Gardena Grödnerhof’s impressive spa.
As for restaurants, the Grödnerhof comes with two; given the setting, the hearty Restaurant Gardena would be more than adequate, but it’s joined by the MICHELIN-Starred restaurant Anna Stuben.
