There’s plenty of scenic shoreline around Lake Constance — known as the Bodensee in German — one of the largest lakes in central Europe. Arguably the loveliest stretch is in the foothills of the northern Alps near the Swiss border, where the medieval city of Konstanz rises up on the waterfront. RIVA occupies one of the stately Art Nouveau villas on the lakeside promenade, and while the boutique hotel blends in with its surroundings, it’s been expanded and fully reimagined inside. The sleek, mostly white interiors, flooded with natural light, are reminiscent of a modern art gallery, while up on the rooftop, an ethereal outdoor pool, heated year-round, has dazzling views over the water.

Rooms and suites are minimalist and smartly designed — some with parquet floors, dark wood paneling, and soaking tubs, others lighter and brighter with private balconies facing the lake. All feature sophisticated lighting systems, Nespresso machines, and luxurious bathrooms with heated floors. On the villa’s ground floor, the two-MICHELIN-Star Ophelia specializes in creative French cuisine, and the more casual Lakeside has a convertible glass facade to make the most of the water views. As the sun goes down, glowing lanterns illuminate the open-air terrace and a dreamy outdoor lounge set amid landscaped gardens. In colder months, the fireplace-warmed Riva bar and walk-in wine cellar are especially inviting.
