Set not in the Lyon city center but in the venerable (and upscale) suburb of Écully, the Maison d’Anthouard is a 17th-century mansion featuring substantial 19th-century additions and, of course, a modern makeover on the way to becoming the luxury boutique hotel that you see today. Its 16 rooms are a master class in adapting classic architecture for contemporary hospitality use; the atmosphere, not just in the rooms but in the house and gardens as well, is aristocratic without feeling intimidating. Meanwhile the hotel’s kitchen serves everything from a hearty French breakfast to an artful gastronomic dinner.
