Château & Village Castigno is “distributed” hotel — it’s spread throughout the village, in houses and buildings that are color-coded to set them apart from this living village’s remaining private dwellings.

3. CRISTINE BEDFOR — Minorca, Spain
Cristine Bedfor is named for a fictional character dreamt up by hotelier Cristina Lonzano. It’s a multi-layered concept, a local’s vision of a British traveler’s idea of a perfectly hospitable Menorcan residence.

4. HOTEL JUNE — Malibu, California
This is what you want from a Malibu boutique hotel: stylish but unpretentious, comfortable but not extravagant, bohemian but not overly busy, and tempered by a bit of Modernist austerity.

5. VOLKSHAUS — Basel, Switzerland
Once a castle, later a brewery, still later a concert hall and office complex, Volkshaus has been central to Basel’s public life for centuries, and the hotel that stands here today is both thorough update and sensitive restoration.
