In Photos: The Spectacular Three Key Hotels of the American West

The ins and outs of three outstanding hotels in Montana, Arizona, and Utah.

The Three Key distinction is the highest hotel honor in The MICHELIN Guide. Earning One Key or Two Keys is difficult enough, but only 11 hotels received the Three Key distinction in the United States in our first Key announcement.

In our second announcement of Key hotels in the United States, on September 12, 2024, five more hotels joined the Three Key Club in America. Of those, three make their home in the stunning natural landscapes of the American West.

Below, a closer look at the architecture and interior design that distinguishes them from nearly every other hotel in the world.

Amangiri

Lake Powell, Utah

The concrete of Amangiri’s buildings blends so perfectly into the jagged rock formations of the Southwestern desert in part because designers used sand right from the site in their mix: a stroke of genius that reflects why this is one of the most iconic sanctuaries in the United States. That photo above, of a pool floating around a jutting outpost of a natural cliff, is about as striking as you’ll find of any hotel in our collection.

Sage Lodge

Yellowstone National Park, Montana

Near enough to America’s most famous national park, Yellowstone, to offer its own curated tours of the grounds, it goes without saying that guests at Sage Lodge will spend much of their time in the marvels of the landscape. On site, designers have done all they can to bring those marvels inside. In the main lodge, giant windows frame wilderness views, with artfully introduced outdoor seating that eliminates all barriers between guests and the stunning views of mountain and river.

Canyon Ranch Tucson

Tucson, Arizona

Founded in 1979 amidst the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, Canyon Ranch Tuscon is the most storied hotel on this list by some three decades (by contrast, Amangiri was founded in 2009, and Sage Lodge in 2018). It remains a trailblazer in holistic wellness, and even its design lends itself to that overarching vision — from the meditative, earthy tones of the guest rooms, to the meticulous landscaping that enlivens the 150-acre desert retreat with ample cacti and vegetation.
