Just In: A New Three-Star Restaurant in the 2018 MICHELIN guide Italy

The 2018 MICHELIN Guide Italy is here, and with it, a new three-starred restaurant: chef Norbert Niederkofler’s St. Hubertus in Northern Italy’s San Cassiano, serving up sublime Alpine cuisine studded with ingredients from the surrounding Dolomites. The country now boasts nine restaurants holding a coveted three-star designation.

"Ode to the surrounding nature using the delicious produce of the alpine region, and to the farmers and local producers with whom he works every day, Niederkofler’s dishes tell a thousand and one stories!" enthuses Michael Ellis, International Director in charge of the MICHELIN guides. "Discovering his cuisine is an unforgettable human experience full of emotion."

Already awarded three stars in the previous edition, the restaurants Piazza Duomo in Alba, Da Vittorio in Brusaporto, Dal Pescatore in Canneto Sull'Oglio, Reale in Castel di Sangro, Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence, Osteria Francescana in Modena, La Pergola in Rome and La Calandre in Rubano retain their stars this year.
San Cassiano is also home to a new two-starred restaurant: chef Matteo Metullio’s La Siriola. “Using a selection of top-quality ingredients, chef Metullio creates dishes with a strong, immediately recognizable character—an approach which explains the runaway success of his cuisine,” say MICHELIN Guide inspectors. Vun, serving up traditional Italian cuisine in Milan, and Alberto Faccani’s Magnolia in Cesenatico, have also joined the two star ranks. The 2018 selection includes 41 restaurants with two stars.

Twenty-two new restaurants receive one star this year, bringing the number of one-star restaurants in the 2018 selection to 306.

In this 2018 selection, Lombardy is the most dynamic region, with 63 Michelin-starred restaurants, including 7 appearing for the first time, followed by Campania with 41 restaurants and Piedmont with 40 restaurants.

Up from 343 last year, Italy now has a total of 356 stars, second only to France.
