8ème Arr. (Champs-Élysées/Madeleine)Hôtel Fouquet’s is meant to be a 21st century palace hotel, a contemporary complement to the classic likes of Le Crillon or the Plaza Athenée. In this it lands pretty much right on the mark. The interiors, by Jacques Garcia, are the very picture of modern (not modernist) luxury – they look to us pretty much as The Ritz’s classic interiors must have looked to the hotel critics of the year 1898.

(Champs-Élysées/Madeleine)It takes a lot to break into the top tier of Parisian hotels, but the impossibly ultra-luxe Bulgari Hotel Paris immediately became the first choice of quite a few high-end travellers. Here the utmost luxury is accompanied by a tastefulness that’s uncommon, to say the least; the Bulgari Bar is a meeting place for Parisian movers and shakers, and the vast spa is as lavish as any.

Here, seemingly unconstrained by budgetary concerns, Starck’s imagination runs wild. Underneath the miraculous design, however, is not some fly-by-night boutique, but an impeccably crafted and luxurious top-tier hotel, with all the trappings that entails.

2nd Arr. (La Bourse)Leave the tourists to gawk at the ostentatious facade of the Hôtel Ritz on the Place Vendôme. The smart money is on – and presumably in – Park Hyatt Paris – Vendôme. Luxurious rooms are a given in a Park Hyatt; here the value added comes from the inspired design, mixing neutral tones with rich textures, moody lighting and hybrid antique-modern furnishings – classic silhouettes rendered in crisp contemporary forms and colours.
