Set as it is in the historic old town, with views of the estuary, Hotel Tayko Bilbao is nothing if not attractive — this picturesque 1924 building has been not just preserved but updated with modern architectural interventions in steel, glass, and polished concrete. The result is one part industrial and one part classic, and the rooms, from the cozy singles to the junior suites, benefit from the lively contrast. As do the public spaces — especially the restaurants, the Michelin-starred Ola and the more casual Bodega de Ola, both overseen by the highly regarded (and highly decorated) Basque chef Martín Berasategui.
