MICHELIN Guide restaurants in England with the best terrace dining

Where to book when outdoor dining reopens on 12 April

Next month restaurants will be allowed to serve customers outdoors but, as any cricketer knows, April can often mean showers, northerly breezes and two jumpers. So, if the weather gods don’t play ball and an early summer is not delivered, here’s a selection of restaurants in England with terraces that’ll protect us from the elements.

London

Hicce
Small plates, sharing boards and ‘hot sticks’ served on a terrace with substantial umbrellas and heaters, as well as an outlook over Coal Drops Yard

Lurra
Heated and covered courtyard dining and a great range of Basque-inspired nibbles and sharing plates

Clipstone
A buzzy corner spot in Fitzrovia offering heated and covered outside dining, along with heart-warming cooking

Stanley’s
A great choice for that romantic post-lockdown date. Book a table in the flower-festooned covered and heated courtyard

Le Pont de la Tour
Canopies and heaters keep the worst of the weather at bay, while the Thameside setting and views of Tower Bridge compete with the French-inspired food for your attention

Julie’s
A table on the canopied terrace of this rejuvenated Holland Park hangout will revive anyone suffering from lockdown tedium

England

Craft - Birmingham
Book a futuristic dining pod or capsule or, for a larger group, opt for a table with a fire-pit, then tuck into the creative cooking

Crown - Bray
There’s no heating but plenty of space in their large open-sided marquee. The hearty British dishes will warm you from within

Salt - Brighton and Hove
The covered and elevated terrace overlooks the (hopefully) sunny promenade, while the seafood dishes make great use of the Josper grill

Kosterhaus - Bristol
For a slice of alfresco dining on a handsome terrace, with dishes inspired by Mittel-European cuisine, head to this gem in Cabot Circus.

Mark Jordan at the Beach - Jersey, Channel Islands
Beachside dining with expansive bay views on a covered and heated terrace. The refined seafood-orientated dishes use the best local produce

Sumas - Jersey, Channel Islands
In previous years we’ve even eaten on this terrace on sunny February days – and with views over the harbour and castle it’s bound to banish the lockdown blues.

Hooked on the Rocks - Falmouth
There are six heated and covered tables and ten open to the elements. With stunning views over Swanpool beach, seafood has never tasted better

20 Stories - Manchester
The impressive roof terrace with its canopy of trees, alfresco fireplaces and skyline views is bound to prove as popular as the modern British dishes

Hjem - Wall
Outdoor pop-up wine bar for three weeks, with weekly changing menu of small plates. Fire pits, hot water bottles and blankets offer respite against any chilly weather and it delivers impressive Northumberland views.

Black Rat - Winchester
Pre-book a heated hut in the garden for something a little different. The bohemian vibe is accompanied by cooking that has its own quirky touches

Star Inn the City - York
Little sister to the Star Inn at Harome, this buzzy brasserie with gutsy cooking ticks all the outdoor dining boxes with its oversized umbrellas and riverside views
