From a pop-up in New York City to a stall in a Denver food hall and now a neighborhood staple, this Bib Gourmand is run by married couple Doris Yuen and Kenneth Wan. The food is inspired by family recipes and their parents' journeys as Hong Kong immigrants and chefs. "MAKfam is our way of exploring who we are," Wan explains. "It's our way of finding our roots and identity through food."

That reason is why the food here transcends taste—it is about creating a connection on a deeper level, something that recalls a distant memory or feeling of home. "It’s one thing to make something delicious, but if that first bite can bring someone back to a happy memory or take them back to a time or place they enjoyed—that’s the magic of food, and that’s what I’m after," adds Wan.

What is the dish to order at MAKfam?

Fancy Wonton Soup. 

Our Fancy Wonton Soup holds a special place in my heart. Anyone who's experienced Chinese takeout is likely familiar with wonton soup—it's a dish that was a fixture at my family’s restaurant, beloved by many. Typically, it’s served in a simple, clear broth, often considered an "old standby." I felt that this classic Cantonese dish deserved more recognition, so I set out to elevate it and make it the star of the meal. At MAKfam, we stuff our wontons with a blend of chicken and shrimp, then pour a creamy, golden chicken broth over them. It's finished with fresh cilantro and drizzled with our house-made XO sauce. This dish is my way of reimagining a traditional favorite, transforming it into something special.

When is the best time to stop by?

We're open 6 days a week (closed every Tuesday), 11:00 a.m. - 8:45 p.m. from Sunday - Thursday and 11:00 a.m. - 9:45 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Come in for lunch if you want a delicious, quick bite. Come in for dinner if you want the full experience (food, atmosphere, high energy, potential wait times).

What is your goal with MAKfam?

With MAKfam, we wanted to build a fast-casual spot that’s fun, vibrant, and has the energy of Central Hong Kong—picture big, bold neon signs lighting up the room! Our goal was to create a space that feels fresh and original, where customers can feel like they’re grabbing a bite in a bustling, faraway city.

How would you describe your approach to food and cooking? 

Every time we work on a new menu item, we’re digging into the foods that have stayed with us, the dishes that made us feel comforted or cared for over the years. 

How did you conceive of a menu that is delicious, yet good value?

A significant part of our approach lies in thoughtful sourcing and precise portion control. We focus on ingredients that are both high-quality and accessible, allowing us to craft dishes that deliver great value. When we add new items to the menu, I personally sit down, taste the dish, and evaluate every detail: Is the flavor balanced? Is the portion satisfying? Will the guest feel they've received true value? Experiencing each dish as our guests do allows us to keep our standards high and ensure everything aligns with our vision.
