Chef Faisal Alharmoodi’s Abu Dhabi Is Calm, Confident and Creative

Discover the Emirati chef’s favorite spots around the UAE capital.

Having stepped up to cook for his family at just 13 when his mother fell ill, Faisal Alharmoodi was perhaps always destined to become the first Emirati chef to earn a Bib Gourmand distinction for his seafood restaurant, ryba. Through a culinary journey shaped by passion, heritage and a deep appreciation for his country’s culture, Alharmoodi has watched Abu Dhabi grow into a vibrant hub of business, tourism and world-class dining. “My earliest memories of Abu Dhabi are filled with warmth and family — walking along the Corniche, enjoying the vibrant energy of the old souq,” he recalls. “It was a time when life was simpler, and the sense of community was everything.”

Now, the acclaimed chef walks us through some of his favorite local gems, many of which continue to fuel his creativity in the kitchen.

For celebrating: Zuma

“Zuma is my top pick. It’s got the perfect vibe for a celebration, lively atmosphere, amazing views of Reem Island and a menu that always impresses.”

Renowned for its refined take on Japanese izakaya, the Abu Dhabi outpost of MICHELIN-selected Zuma dazzles from the moment you descend its softly lit staircase. Opening into a chic dining area with breathtaking waterfront views, Zuma breathes new life into classic Japanese dishes, including favorites such as salmon sashimi, miso-marinated black cod and freshly prepared rolls. Additionally, signature dishes from the robata grill steal the show, creating an immersive dining experience that delights all the senses.

“An Iranian restaurant serving traditional dishes rich in flavor, such as kebabs and saffron rice, all in a warm setting that reflects Persian culture. It’s all great for sharing.”

Warm and welcoming, Soraya invites diners to experience the richness of Persian cuisine in a dreamy greenhouse-style setting. Tucked away in Yas Mall, in a nature-inspired space filled with lush greenery, it’s perfect for relaxed gatherings with friends or family. For a quick bite: Lento and Marmellata Bakery

“Lento has the best burger in town. Everything is made from scratch, with care and premium ingredients. It’s quick, convenient and always tastes spot on. I also love Marmellata, a family-run pizza spot with deep Abu Dhabi roots. Their pizza may look simple, but the flavors are layered, thoughtful and truly memorable.”

Founded by fellow Emirati chef Faisal Naser in 2020, Lento is an effortlessly stylish fast-food concept serving legendary smash burgers, fried chicken and playful takes on global classics. Showcasing a minimalist, industrial-inspired design, all eyes are on Naser’s creative flavor combinations, such as the signature spicy Picante with 160g double grass-fed wagyu, American cheese, green salsa, jalapeños and spicy Lento sauce.

Another casual dining spot that packs a flavorful punch is that of Abu Dhabi-born pizzeria Marmellata Bakery. Utilizing the finest local ingredients, including UAE-grown mushrooms from Below Farm, figs from Qattf in Liwa and locally produced burrata, this hotspot has won the hearts of avid pizza lovers. The restaurant’s stuffed focaccia, sandwiches and calzones are equally delicious.

Must-visit: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

“Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It’s a masterpiece and a true reflection of our culture, faith and architecture. It leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.”

A trip to Abu Dhabi would not be complete without visiting the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, built under the wishes of the UAE’s founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who envisioned it as a place of harmony and cultural connection. Open to all, visitors are invited to wander through vast marble courtyards beneath glittering Swarovski chandeliers and past still pools that reflect its towering minarets and intricate design details.

For coffee: Parallel

“Parallel is special. They’ve taken an old Abu Dhabi house and transformed it into a modern café space while preserving its soul. It’s a beautiful blend of past and present — just like the city itself.”

Abu Dhabi is home to its fair share of coffee connoisseurs, and Parallel has certainly made its mark. Housed inside a beautifully converted villa, this Emirati-owned café offers a tranquil, Bali-inspired retreat to elevate your afternoon coffee ritual with specialty brews and a side of Instagram-worthy desserts. Adding to the café’s appeal, Parallel also serves hearty all-day breakfast options and has ample space for guests to stay and work or study.

For pastries: OsK Croissanterie

As the city’s first culinary concept dedicated to specialty croissants, OsK Croissanterie promises to satisfy every craving with its flaky, buttery goodness and array of creative toppings. Located on the serene waterfront enclave of Al Bateen, the Emirati-owned eatery serves sweet treats such as the double-baked almond croissant, the tiramisu cruffin and the aseeda Danish alongside savory delights like the avocado labneh croissant and pesto burrata croissant.
