Chef-owner Akmal Anuar’s Abu Dhabi is Authentic, Down-to-Earth and Rooted in Innovation

Explore the UAE-based chef’s favorite spots around the capital, from SUSHISAMBA to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Born and raised in Singapore to parents who ran a hawker food stall, Akmal Anuar knew he wanted to be a chef from the moment the smell of fresh bread first captivated him as a child. Fast forward a few years, and he landed himself a job working in a French restaurant — and hasn’t looked back since. He is now one of the most celebrated chefs in the UAE, opening several acclaimed culinary concepts, including Bib Gourmand Otoro in Abu Dhabi.

Following his success elsewhere in the Emirates, opening his first restaurant in Abu Dhabi felt like a natural next step. Anuar has been infatuated with the city since his first visit, and it felt like the perfect home for Otoro’s contemporary Japanese concept. “I arrived in Abu Dhabi back in 2012 for an interview,” says Anuar. “I saw the Grand Mosque and had lunch at the Conrad hotel. Everything looked really big to me.”

While Anuar was certain about opening Otoro in the capital, the timing of the launch was a little more spontaneous and required a leap of faith. However, the risk certainly paid off. He explains: “It was an opportunity. Abu Dhabi is the capital. We were in the midst of COVID, and my business partner proposed a restaurant in Al Qana. I thought, ‘why not?’

Since setting down roots in the city, Abu Dhabi has become a second home for Anuar. Here, he shares his guide to the top spots around town.

For a relaxed bite with friends: SUSHISAMBA

For Anuar, SUSHISAMBA has all the ingredients for a casual meal with good company. “The vibe is warm and inviting, it’s the kind of place where you can enjoy, share plates and have a relaxed, good time with friends,” he explains.

SUSHISAMBA has become a go-to destination for both gastronomes and revelers alike. It’s the kind of place where the drinks flow as easily as the conversations, live music pulses through the venue, and people connect over its signature fusion of Japanese, Peruvian and Brazilian flavors. Adding to an impressive list of international locations, the capital’s outpost is situated within the sleek Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, featuring sushi and robata grill counters, a curved terrace surrounded by lush greenery and direct views of the tranquil Corniche waters.

For something quick: Antonia

“My schedule is always tight. I come and go quickly once I’ve finished my job,” says Anuar. “But if I had to name a place, it would be Antonia. This place is a vibe.”

Fittingly named after the owner’s “nonna” (grandmother), Antonia promises authentic, no-fuss Italian fare on Mamsha Al Saadiyat. Diners can expect all the hearty classics, including handcrafted pastas, sourdough pizzas and creamy risottos, all made with love. Complementing the comforting creations, the charming retro interiors and warm hospitality are sure to make you want to linger a little longer than planned.

For celebrating: Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental

When it comes to celebrating life’s special moments, Anuar has a clear winner. “Definitely the Emirates Palace,” he says. “Once in a while, that’s the place if you can afford it."

Catching the sunlight with its gold exteriors in brilliant contrast against blue skies, it doesn’t get much grander than Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental in Abu Dhabi. Showcasing an enviable blend of luxurious comfort, impeccable service and unique dining experiences, the main building is a spectacle in itself, spanning over one kilometer from one wing to the other. Beautifully framed by 100 hectares of lush gardens, glistening pools, a private marina and an idyllic private beach, it’s the ultimate backdrop for any occasion.

Family-friendly go-to: SeaWorld Yas Island

SeaWorld at Yas Island is always a hit with families and visitors. Anuar describes it as “Good for the kids. It’s huge and you’ll spend the whole day there.”

A haven for explorers of all ages, SeaWorld is the region’s first marine life theme park. Made up of eight immersive realms inspired by different parts of the world, guests enjoy an array of sea creatures as well as interactive entertainment, rides and close-up encounters. Supporting regional and international conservation efforts, the theme park is located next to the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center, a dedicated hub for marine research, rescue and rehabilitation of marine life.

For a taste of home comforts: Soraya

To satisfy his craving for some home comforts, the chef’s recommendation is a cozy yet stylish Persian restaurant. “Soraya opened in Yas Mall, and I had a very good meal there,” says Anuar.

Located on the ground floor of the mall, Soraya is an ode to the rich flavors of Persian cuisine, housed within a delightful greenhouse setting. The all-day menu emphasizes communal feasting, with charcoal-grilled meats and kabobs filling the air with a familiar aroma that evokes the vibrant streets of Tehran.

For something baked: Lets by Chef Faisal Al Harmoodi

Lets by Chef Faisal Al Harmoodi is Anuar’s favorite spot for pastries. Adorned with natural materials, neutral hues, pops of color and local art, the menu is just as fresh as the interiors, with flaky, golden pastries straight from the oven and a tempting selection of cakes such as the coconut passionfruit cake and faloda milk cake, perfect for pairing with a cup of coffee. In addition to sweet treats, the eatery also serves a variety of breakfast favorites, plus lunch and dinner options including salads, pasta and steak.

Must-visit: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

As one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and one of the first places Anuar laid eyes on in Abu Dhabi, his recommendation for the city’s must-visit destination is no surprise. “I usually bring guests to the Grand Mosque,” he explains. “It is just majestic.”

Presenting a striking blend of spiritual significance and architectural splendor, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one to add to every travel bucket list. Commissioned by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as a symbol of openness and cultural connection, the mosque welcomes visitors into an awe-inspiring space, featuring endless white marble, glistening chandeliers and still water features that mirror every detail of its grand design.
