Last week, the MICHELIN Guide Switzerland 2019 selection was released, featuring a whopping total of 128 starred restaurants—including the newly two-starred focus in Vitznau and Pavillon in Zurich—more than ever before.
The country of Switzerland is depicted by Alpine peaks replete with ski resorts, thick forests and lush green meadows, to which you can add meticulously preserved traditional villages. The capital city of Bern—the fifth most populous city in the country—dates back to the 12th century, making it a hotbed of historical museums and monuments, as well as a gorgeous setting to have a meal.
From Mediterranean to modern fare, here are the top four restaurants in Bern.
Meridiano
Designation: One StarWhat Our Inspectors Say: “This elegant restaurant with its wonderful view and stunning terrace is absolutely the place to eat in Bern. The food is modern and sophisticated, fully-flavored and intense, and made with top-quality Swiss ingredients.”
Milles Sens - Les Goûts du Monde
Designation: Bib GourmandWhat Our Inspectors Say: “If you are looking for a lively, modern restaurant, this minimalist-style establishment is for you. The mouthwatering menu promises Aargau chicken tagine, Gurten highland beef duo, and exotic Thai green vegetable curry. At midday there is also an interesting business lunch menu.”
Kirchenfeld
Designation: Bib GourmandWhat Our Inspectors Say: “Eating in this loud and lively restaurant is great fun! Try the flavorsome zander fish served on Mediterranean couscous and one of the sweets, which include lemon tart and chocolate cake, displayed on the dessert trolley. At lunchtimes the restaurant is full of business people who swear by the daily set menu.”
Schöngrün
Designation: Bib GourmandWhat Our Inspectors Say: “The food on offer here at Schöngrün, a period villa next to the Zentrum Paul Klee, is now a little more down-to-earth but has lost none of its flavor. High quality ingredients produce delicious dishes such as breast of poularde with risini, spring onions, summer truffle and Parmesan. The tables in the modern glazed pavilion-style annex are lovely and there's also a pretty garden terrace.”
