29

Chic, elegant, breathtaking. Our inspectors are at a loss for words to describe 29’s terrace. Thanks to its hilltop location, there is nowhere better to take in views of the bustling Bosphorus and elegant minarets. Against this backdrop, you can savour a refreshing take on Turkish classics such as lamb’s liver and sea bass fillet from the barbecue. After dinner, it’s certainly worth hanging around because, in the evenings, this establishment turns into a nightclub!

Alaf

Located in the bustling Kuruçeşme neighbourhood, Alaf is something of a hidden gem. The decor reflects the nomadic-style cuisine served here, a unique take on traditional street food. You should definitely take the time to visit the rooftop terrace, where you will also find a cocktail bar and the kitchen. Located close to the water, this place affords splendid views, enhanced by a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Lokanta 1741

Lokanta 1741’s rooftop terrace is the perfect place in which to gaze deeply into your sweetheart’s eyes. Subdued lighting means romance is in the air in this secluded space; it’s also heated, so you can even sit here in autumn. This is a setting in which to truly savour a contemporary take on Turkish classics such as Kakavaia fish stew.

Mikla

Mikla is located on the 18th floor, at one of Istanbul’s highest points, and promises a breathtaking 360° view of the city. From the moment the lift doors open, the panorama will blow you away. From the rooftop terrace, you can admire, in particular, the beauty of the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapı Palace, both illuminated at night. This gem serves New Anatolian Kitchen, and like the location, the standard of the cuisine is sky high.

Mürver

Trendy rooftop restaurant draws a local and international crowd, who come here to see and be seen. However, it is the view over the Golden Horn and the coming and going of the boats on the Bosphorus that really steal the show. Sitting on the terrace with a cocktail in your hand is a magical experience, especially if you arrive just before sunset. The sight of the sun going down and the countless lights coming on across the city is unforgettable. Mürver is a hip spot in which to savour dishes cooked on the open fire.

Nicole

The view over the colourful historical buildings of Istanbul is beguiling, and the reflection of the moon in the Bosphorus is truly spellbinding. For our inspectors, it was love at first sight! This chic restaurant is on the fourth floor of the Tomtom Suites hotel. Originally the residence of the Soeurs Garde-Malades, this place is full of character. In this gorgeous setting, you can sample an original take on Turkish classics such as dolma and kazandibi.

Spago Istanbul by Wolfgang Puck

Dimmed lights, relaxing lounge music in the background and a breathtaking terrace, which is the place to be if the weather permits. At Spago, you can truly experience Istanbul’s hip, cosmopolitan side – that goes for both the setting and the food, with dishes ranging from sushi to house-made tagliolini and barbecued seafood. This glamorous rooftop of the upmarket St. Regis hotel is a wonderful showcase for Maçka Park and the Bosphorus.

Tershane

Fancy experiencing the contemporary version of Istanbul? Then head to the eighth floor of Hotel Momento. Its large windows afford views of the city's historical skyline (on the ninth floor, there is an even better view from the terrace!), and the decor is sleek and stylish. The menu is dedicated to mezze, kebabs and barbecued lamb dishes. You can watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen, skilfully blending spices and smoky flavours; presentation is also taken very seriously. Turkish bread from the barbecue, for example, is served with an indulgent barbecued bell pepper cream that brings out the natural sweetness of the vegetable, and a judicious touch of smoked paprika and olive oil for an extra kick. Generous, spicy, unctuous and bold: a true Turkish feast!
