Modern Design 和 Lively
It would be foolish for the Watergate Hotel to run away from its reputation — it was, after all, the site of what’s still the biggest scandal in American politics since Teapot Dome. So this venerable D.C. institution, fresh off nine years of closure followed by a massive renovation, is sailing straight into the wind, positioning itself as the ideal venue for hosting a (hopefully not career-ending) scandal of your own.

In a town whose high-end hotels are conservative almost to a fault, the Watergate is refreshing for the fact that it’s not just luxurious, but visually decadent as well. Designer Ron Arad is responsible for the interiors, combining retro modernism with cutting-edge curves to complement architect Luigi Moretti’s vintage plan, and all the hotel’s staff, from the doormen to the housekeepers, were costumed by Mad Men designer Janie Bryant.

The rooms are luxe, in a monochrome palette, a welcome departure from the college-club colors favored by other Washington hotels. If you’re lucky your balcony will face the Potomac River — and if you’re not just lucky but a bit ruthless as well, you’ll probably be in a Diplomat or Presidential suite, with acres of indoor space and, in the latter case, not one but two commanding upper-floor balconies.

Kingbird is the fine-dining restaurant, Top of the Gate the rooftop bar with the 360-degree panoramic view, and the Next Whisky Bar is the place to enjoy a dram or two with your co-conspirators. Just don’t take any unnecessary risks — as your room key reminds you, at the new Watergate there’s “no need to break in.”
