Chapung Sebali

If your Danish design sense is tingling as you scan the photos of Chapung Sebali, you’re not mistaken. For this boutique hotel, though it’s located on the outskirts of Ubud, in inland Bali, is in fact operated by Guldsmeden, the group responsible for a few of our favorite hotels in Copenhagen. And it’s fair to say the combination of Balinese villas and Scandinavian modernism is a winning one.

It’s not just a particularly stylish Balinese villa hotel, but a luxurious one as well. The least of its accommodations is a 60-square-meter suite with a view down the Osh Valley, and includes a loft area with a pair of single beds in addition to its king-bed master bedroom. Pool suites add private plunge pools and a bit more space, while the one- and two-bedroom villas and the Residence are positively palatial.

Jungle Fish is the pool bar, where lounge chairs and cabanas cluster around an impressive hillside infinity pool, and the Jungle Fish restaurant turns out Mediterranean and Asian flavors. A second restaurant, Jungle Fish Upper Deck, offers a more romantic vibe, and the Blind Pig brings speakeasy-style craft cocktails to Bali. It’s been a while since this island was anything like a secret, and it’s hard to make it feel new again — but this Danish-accented newcomer provides just the right note of intrigue.
