India’s southwestern state of Kerala is, perhaps unsurprisingly, something of a paradise when it comes to beach holidays. And Kovalam, near the state’s southern edge, has quickly transformed itself from the archetypal fishing village into one of India’s most exceptional destinations. It’s here, set on a lush green hillside just a few minutes’ walk inland from Samudra Beach, that you’ll find Taj Green Cove Resort & Spa, a perfect example of the sort of quietly stylish, highly competent luxury hospitality which is the Taj group’s specialty.
Its setting is near enough to the beach for convenience’s sake, but just removed enough for an added measure of privacy — it’s closer to the edge of a tranquil lagoon, and is surrounded on three sides by dense forest. The resort itself combines traditional Keralan architecture with a pronounced Balinese influence, and its cottages and villas lack for nothing when it comes to comfort.
Like any Taj resort worth its salt, this one comes with a Jiva spa, capable of restoring even the most world-weary traveler. And a more urgent form of restoration is available at the three restaurants: Curries, the upscale Indian option, Bait, specializing in ultra-fresh seafood, and Jasmine Bay, the versatile all-day eatery.
