Traditional Elegance 和 Quiet
Two MICHELIN Keys · An exceptional stay
Located on a verdant, tree-lined suburban street, the only thing that distinguishes Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel from the other mansions in Grunewald is a small sign lit subtly in white lights. Not surprisingly, it started out as a private residence in 1914: Walther von Pannwitz, the original owner, was a personal advisor to the Kaiser Wilhelm and as fervent a patriot as he was an art collector and attorney. Subsequent renovations — as expected, by Patrick Hellmann — split the difference between reverent Bavarianism and sleek contemporary poise. Don’t worry, the glass chandeliers, plush red rugs, and pop-eyed Prussian portraits still have their say; nevertheless, the place maintains a glittering present-day ambience, neither gaudy nor intimidating despite the surplus of gold leaf.
Once inside, there's something for everyone, from executive travelers to poodle-toting fashionistas. There's the GQ Bar as well as Wellfood, whose gorgeous plates hit the expected note for health-conscious diners. In any case, we can’t recommend breakfast here highly enough, given the views over the manicured gardens from the sun-soaked conservatory.
Sumptuous carpets, ornamental headboards, velvet, and embroidery characterize the rooms — though Premium rooms benefit immensely from Patrick Hellmann’s inimitable touch, available in either New York or Bohème flavors. Continental, Roaring Twenties throwbacks abound: tuxedo blacks and whites lend a glamorous and impeccably sharp energy to the interiors, finding echoes in copious Art Deco lines and the bathrooms’ glossy tile. Downstairs, the spa and fitness center complete the picture of unfailing privacy and luxury, including a heated indoor pool and bracing views of the pine forest. You’ll have to leave eventually, and unfortunately, but that’s just another problem to be massaged away in the meantime.
