Contemporary Classic 和 Quiet
Japan’s Ise-Shima region, in Mie prefecture, may not be on everyone’s radar yet, but home to Shinto’s holiest shrine, Ise Jingu, and several other sacred sites, it’s always been a popular domestic travel destination. Since the G7 summit right here at Shima Kanko Hotel in 2016, it has gained a bit more international attention. And more relevant to those of us who weren’t invited to the G7 is the fact that Shima Kanko’s newer, 50-room Baysuites wing is perhaps the best option for enjoying the area, which maintains the slow tempo and unspoiled landscapes for which Japanese country life is famous.
The rooms are all suites, as the name suggests, and some come with balconies overlooking the peaceful Ago Bay. The design may err on the side of restraint, but when both the living area and the spacious bathroom (stocked with Clarins amenities) boast panoramic views of the bay or the lush trees of the surrounding Ise-Shima National Park, you’ll have plenty to look at outdoors.
Given the oceanfront location, it’s no surprise that the hotel’s two restaurants both pride themselves in their seafood-centric menus. The pan-seared black abalone at French restaurant La Mer is something of a legend around here; while Hamayu offers delicately crafted kaiseki course dinner along with a solid selection of locally brewed sake and shochu.
If you’re up for an excursion, pick up a rental bike to explore the countryside and the quaint nearby towns, or ask the hotel staff to arrange transportation to Ise Shrine. But here, staying in isn’t such a bad idea either. After relaxing in the sauna and spa bath, indulge in a quiet teatime in the library or take a refreshing stroll in expertly landscaped rooftop garden while taking in the sweeping views of the abundant nature. When the evening comes, stop by the lounge for classic cocktails and the sublime sunset.
