Traditional Elegance & Lively
In the middle of the 20th century, this Collins Avenue classic hosted every conceivable A-list celebrity in high Art Deco style. It was renovated in the 1950s by the legendary Miami Beach modernist architect Morris Lapidus, in the first of what would be a long series of updates — the latest of which leaves it in what might be its most impressive form, newly re-christened The Shelborne By Proper.

The building and its grounds have been treated with a respect bordering on reverence, which is as it should be. But the new interiors, thankfully, are no mid-century revival — the look is modernist-inspired, but fresh and contemporary, and while it looks native to its South Florida setting, it’s not like anything else in town.

That iconic Shelborne pool looks as fine as ever, and it’s joined by a fitness center that goes far beyond ordinary hotel-gym equipment — Peloton bikes, Pilates reformers, an Alo Yoga studio, and more. Meanwhile the restaurants and bars start with the all-day Pool Deck and range all the way up to Pauline, the signature restaurant, whose menu leans on South Florida’s vibrant Latin and Caribbean influences.
