Shade Hotel, Redondo Beach
655 North Harbor Drive, Los Angeles Area, USA
54 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Lively
Redondo Beach has been a pioneer of coastal California hospitality since the late 1800s, when railroad construction led to a sprawling wooden resort, aptly named the Great Hotel Redondo, in this part of the South Bay. Safe to say our concept of a great hotel is a little different from the Victorian-era Californians’, but they knew a good location when they saw one. While we’re talking firsts: the proprietors of Shade like to be the first to put down luxury boutique roots in a community, and this hotel is the first of its kind in Redondo Beach.
They’re setting the bar high. Shade sits directly on the oceanfront, with views all the way north to Malibu. The 54 rooms are the very definition of tranquil, with shades of blue and green to complement the marina views. And for a truly indulgent experience, upgrade to the Rose Suite — you can take in a Pacific sunset from the comfort and privacy of your own balcony soaking tub.
At times it’s easy to forget that you’re still in a major metropolitan area, but if you’re craving a little more excitement than a beach town offers, L.A. is extremely accessible: LAX is seven and a half miles away. But if you just want to stay put, there’s plenty to keep you entertained or relaxed. Grab a complimentary bicycle and ride up the coast to the Redondo and Hermosa piers. And just like its sister establishment in Manhattan Beach, Shade puts a strong emphasis on making sure its guests dine and drink well. You won’t even have to leave the hotel to sample a very good take on coastal California cuisine.
