Located on the shores of the Bosphorus, the Çırağan Palace − the “Palace of Lights”, so named for the illumination that once adorned its exterior − was built during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz (1861–1876). Originally serving as a royal residence, the palace fell into disrepair at the beginning of the 20th century and was further damaged by a fire in 1910.
In 1991, the Palace was reborn as a luxury hotel, combining Ottoman grandeur with modern elegance. Rather than altering the historic structure, developers preserved the original palace and constructed a new, contemporary hotel adjacent to it. Even the new wing, however, features interiors inspired by the palace’s original design.
Both buildings offer a variety of accommodations, but for a true taste of the Çırağan experience − in the spirit of its most illustrious guests (many of whom arrive by helicopter) − a sea-view suite with a private terrace is the way to go.
The hotel embraces a resort-like atmosphere, where leisure takes center stage. Landscaped gardens and swimming pools are scattered throughout the property, while the spa offers a full range of treatments, from traditional Turkish hammams to cutting-edge algae wraps and reflexology. Dining is equally indulgent, whether in the elegant Ottoman-style dining room or on the open-air terrace with sweeping views of the Bosphorus.
