The First MICHELIN Key Hotels: All the Keys in Austria

The MICHELIN Guide announces top honors for Austrian hotels in 2024.

On October 9, 2024, The MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Austria.

This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting.

Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our Inspectors, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys recognize our most outstanding hotels.

In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Austria includes 2 Three Key hotels, 17 Two Key hotels, and 43 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Here's everything you need to know. Or head below to see all the Keys.

14 Hotels with a total of 21 Keys Awarded in Vienna

The big news in Austria is the particularly large number of Keys awarded in the capital of Vienna. In total, 14 hotels earned a total of 21 Keys (including eight One Key hotels, five Two Key hotels, and one Three Key hotel). But isn’t this simply to be expected in Austria’s most famous city, home to almost two million inhabitants? Well, not quite. Let’s take a look at other global metropolises: Rome, with 2.8 million inhabitants, has 18 total Keys, and New York City claimed just about double the number of Keys of Vienna, despite having four times the population.

The impressive collection in Vienna can be divided into two categories. There are the elegant, luxe hotels — mostly steeped in history — such as Hotel Sans Souci, Hotel Imperial, and Palais Coburg. Then, in contrast, there are the young, hip, modern hotels like Hotel Josefine, Hollmann Beletage Design & Boutique Hotel, and The Guesthouse Vienna. A testament to the terrific variety in this fabulous city.

Welcome to Breathtaking Tyrol

Tyrol in Western Austria is known for its breathtaking Alpine landscape, its authentic cuisine boasting dishes such as Kaspressknödeln (cheese dumplings) and Schlutzkrapfen (mezzelune), and its particular brand of hospitality. Indeed, Tyroleans' warmth is the stuff of legend, and this is reflected in the number of hotels in the region presented with a Key or Keys. For example: the One Key hotels Das Central in Sölden, Tannenhof in St. Anton am Arlberg, and Hotel Trofana Royal Resort in Ischgl; plus the Two Key hotels Grand Tirolia Kitzbühel and Alpen-Wellness Resort Hochfirst in Obergurgl. Each one of these properties is first class in its own right — particularly popular in winter.

Burgenland, Carinthia, Upper Austria, and Styria

In these four regions, the landscape is far less Alpine than in Tyrol, and there's truly no one season better than the other to visit. On their travels around this patchwork of hilly landscapes and forests, our Inspectors unearthed exclusive gems. The legendary, fairytale-like Rosewood Schloss Fuschl in Hof near Salzburg in Upper Austria, which reopened this summer after two years of refurbishments, was awarded an exceptional Three Keys.

Other top finds include: the One Key hotel Scheiblhofer THE RESORT in Andau (Burgenland); Impulshotel FREIGOLD in Freistadt (Upper Austria); the 14-room hideaway Montestyria in Styria; and Two Key hotels Schloss Seefels and Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden in Carinthia on Wörthersee.
