Beachy chic is a vibe that’s somewhat rare in England, but at the Gallivant, in the East Sussex seaside town of Camber, it’s in plentiful supply. The Gallivant is now a remarkably swanky boutique hotel, complete with a spare cabin that houses a small Bamford spa. And while it’s inspired by an idealized vision of the Hamptons, its interpretation is a unique one, studiously avoiding transatlantic clichés in favor of a look that’s roughly equal parts casual surf shack and stylish country inn.

The bedrooms incorporate splashes of bold color alongside sober, soothing neutrals, and contrast elegant touches like custom headboards with home-style elements like well-stocked bookshelves and quirky vintage artworks. Some open onto the garden, others onto private decks; all feature more lounge space, and more comfort than you’d expect.

Also far beyond is the Gallivant’s culinary program. The chef prepares a thoughtful breakfast as well as a seasonal menu of locally sourced fare for lunch and dinner, accompanied by an extensive wine list. And if you’d prefer a picnic lunch, they’re happy to pack a basket for you, complete with to-go cocktails and a blanket for the beach.
