Davos, one of Switzerland’s classic ski destinations, among the most elevated towns in Europe, is no stranger to the hospitality business — nor, for that matter, to the conference business. There’s room here for all sorts, including the Turkish-based Rixos group, for whom the Flüela Davos is a rare venture west of the Bosphorus. And it turns out that the Davos hospitality scene benefits from a subtle infusion of foreign flavor.
You’re here to ski, presumably, as slope access to Pischa, Rinerhorn, or Jakobshorn is almost trivially easy, all three being within walking distance. Just as important: you’re here for a familiar, traditional vision of luxury hospitality. The fireplace’s light flickers off button-studded, plush chairs, mingling with light from the chandeliers and warming your surroundings. Polished wood and elegantly fluted glasses meet the touch, while a discreetly professional staff hovers just within reach to meet any sudden needs.
Though the 49 rooms and suites partake of their fair share of parquet flooring and formal wall sconces, they also make concessions to modern technology. Credit the designers for smoothly balancing what might have been a jarring transition from gilded molding, brocaded headboards, and damask to the sterile, minimalist lines we’ve come to expect from our devices. And after balancing yourself out on the slopes, you’ll be grateful to come home to a fully equipped spa — indoor pool, jacuzzi, saunas, and massage treatments — as well as two fine-dining restaurants and a matched pair of bars, one in the lobby and the other in the mezzanine. Bottoms up.
