A stone’s throw from the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Troyes, one of the finest Gothic cathedrals in France, a local family decided to renovate their home, along with the collection of 15th-century buildings next door. Decades later, the result is a pair of luxurious boutique hotels; Le Champ des Oiseaux is the smaller of the two. The elegant timber-framed facade remains, as do many quaint original details — native stone, ornate tilework, wood beams, even antique furniture — though most of it has been carefully restored by master craftsmen, and much of it artfully rearranged.
Old-world charm is plentiful throughout the hotel: romantic brick archways frame the all-day bar, a rustic fireplace warms the dining room, and rooms are set around a quiet courtyard framed by climbing ivy, a space where breakfast is served in warmer months. The simplest rooms are cozy and light-filled with stone flooring, exposed beams, French-made linens, and vintage-styled bathrooms with tubs. Upper-level suites are especially striking with their steeply vaulted ceilings and dormer windows overlooking the courtyard. Also on offer are afternoon tea service, a seasonal outdoor pool, a bicycle rental kiosk, and a small spa ideal for unwinding after a day out exploring the medieval city’s museums or the surrounding Champagne region.
