MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Built from a pair of extra-large kyomachiya shop-houses connected by a newly built garden, Nazuna Kyoto Gosho is the sort of lodging that this city excels at: a modern re-interpretation of a classic form, an evolution of an aesthetic that stretches back centuries. In its current incarnation it’s a modern ryokan with a mere seven units, set within easy walking distance of the Imperial Palace. The hotel’s interiors are both familiar and surprising, and every detail is exquisitely crafted — the theme, in fact, is “wagashi,” the finely wrought miniature confections that are traditionally served with tea.
