It may come as no surprise that a resort named for Jean-Michel Cousteau (son of Jacques, and a famous undersea explorer and filmmaker in his own right) offers a phenomenal diving experience. But there is more to Fiji than undersea life, and this is a resort designed to take full advantage of its unique location.
The word itself, Fiji, is rich with associations, and for good reason, as it has long been one of the most famous vacation destinations in the South Pacific. This is the archetypal island idyll — the resort spans seventeen acres of coconut plantation on the island of Vanua Levu, along the waters of Savusavu Bay. Palm trees, warm crystal blue seas, coral reefs, soft sandy beaches — Fiji is like a code word for all of these things, and all of these things are really here, in plentiful supply.
There is plenty to do here — a vast array of diving options (under the tuition of the in-house marine biologist), and a daily menu of activities allowing guests a guided look at Fiji’s environment and culture. But leisure is equally recommended — those who prefer to spend days on the beach or in the spa will not feel left out. For children, the “Bula camp” is a kids-only version of the exploratory activities offered to the adults.
The resort comprises 25 spacious, private bures, something between a thatched-roof island hut and a luxury condominium, each with at least a king bed and a day bed, and a private deck. The bures have no telephones or televisions, which is a good thing, obviously, and if you’ve read this far, you no doubt understand that it is a conscious choice, to emphasize interacting with the island surroundings, and to accentuate the sense of absolute calm.
Best of all it can be enjoyed utterly guilt-free. Anything with the Cousteau name on it is as green as it gets. This place is not only low-impact and sustainable, but an active force for environmental good — it exists as much for the preservation of Fiji as for your enjoyment of it.
How to get there:
Guests can travel to Nadi International Airport where they will be greeted by a representative from the hotel. From here guests take a one-hour inter-island flight to Savusavu Airport followed by a complimentary ground transfer to Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort.
