Thinking of El Otro Lado, on the edge of Panama’s Portobelo National Park, as simply a four-room hotel risks leaving you with the wrong impression. They’re houses, really, rather than just rooms, each one named for one of El Otro Lado’s four elements: Forest, Sea, Sun and Spirit. And rather than divide them up for individual use, they’re a package deal: the only way to book El Otro Lado is to reserve the whole retreat for your family, friend group, or traveling event.
While the location, on the coastal fringes of the lush rainforest, is obviously the largest part of the appeal, the colorful, well-crafted houses only enhance the experience. Light-hearted contemporary design serves as a backdrop for an eclectic collection of artworks and objets — let it never be said that there’s anything typical about El Otro Lado.
It’s a magical place simply to lounge, whether in the houses or by the infinity pool, looking out over Portobelo Bay. But it’s not as though that’s the only option. Where there’s a national park, all manner of outdoor excursions are sure to follow — not just on land but by on the water as well: from beach excursions and river tours to nature walks, snorkeling and fishing trips, and visits to cultural and historical sites.

El Otro Lado is located 125km (1h30m) from both Tocumen International and Albrook Airports. Transfers can be arranged for USD100 per couple, one way or USD200 round trip.
