The Okuchichibu mountains occupy the Goldilocks zone of Japanese mountain destinations — not too far from Tokyo, and not as forbidding or remote as the Japanese Alps, deeper into Honshu. It’s nominally a resort, though they’ve wisely kept the room tally manageable to keep the views uncrowded and the service top-notch. That also means capacious rooms with floor-to-ceiling views and hot-spring baths.
