There are great places to stay in Portugal’s Serra da Estrela Natural Park, but few are as visually striking or as rooted in regional culture as Casa das Penhas Douradas. Set on a clifftop in Portugal’s highest mountain range, this retro chalet-style escape looks like something straight out of a Wes Anderson film. Though the design is inspired by local tradition, the buildings are relatively new, built with locally sourced materials including cork, birch wood, and wool, and outfitted with a mix of vintage and modern Scandinavian decor. Rooms are stylish and cozy with custom wooden furnishings and large picture windows overlooking the surrounding scenery. All have inviting spaces for reading or working, and suites also feature small libraries and living rooms. There are scenic views from the hotel’s restaurant, the glass-encased heated pool, and an open-air Nordic bath at the spa.
