The 18th-century townhouse that contains the Clarance Hotel, on the west side of Lille’s old town, is as classic as they come, and for many hoteliers, that would be enough. The Clarance, however, doesn’t rest on its historical laurels; it’s full of contemporary art, contemporary design, and modernist furniture that contrasts with the period architecture. Well-chosen modern comforts cement the Clarance’s status as a small luxury hotel for the boutique-hotel era; the restaurant serves inventive seafood-focused French fare using ingredients grown in the hotel’s own gardens.
