Cologne’s old market square is about as close as you can get to the platonic ideal — weathered pavers, the occasional fountain, seasonal vendors, and a showstopping Gothic cathedral to boot. Against that backdrop, Legend Hotel comes off downright Modernist, clean and geometric and confident with a touch of Bauhaus austerity. To be sure, bits of the old world peek through in the design — oak parquet and tasteful gold accents never went out of style — but on the whole, it’s a sharp contrast to its 14th-century neighbors. The rooftop terrace is a splendid vantage point from which to contemplate the city’s architecture.
