Standing out from the traditional guesthouses and villas on Sri Lanka’s idyllic Kabalana Beach, the Sandhya is a modern boutique hotel that’s sleek but understated. The two-story structure, lined with floor-to-ceiling glass revealing magnificent views of the Indian Ocean, is the passion project of its Singaporean owner, who aimed to build the ideal beach house for design-conscious travelers. With stylish mid-century modern interiors, a gorgeous lobby lounge, and a swimming pool crafted out of a repurposed shipping container, his mission was well accomplished.
The hotel’s name derives from the Sanskrit word for “twilight,” which just might be the loveliest time of day to take in unobstructed vistas of sea and sky from one’s room. All nine are elegant and minimalist with polished concrete flooring, bespoke furnishings, natural wood details, and ultra-comfortable beds with luxurious linens. Each has sliding glass doors opening onto a private balcony or patio, but the views over the beach are just as breathtaking from inside the room. Open-plan suites have especially lavish bathrooms with free-standing soaking tubs and spa-like showers. Elsewhere on the property, the double-height, glass-fronted lounge is a popular spot for drinks at sunset, and a farm-to-table restaurant offers elevated takes on Sri Lankan specialties.
