The Provençal countryside is dotted with bastides, or 18th-century country houses, and while many are now used as private vacation homes, others have been turned into hotels. Le Galinier is a cross between the two. This picturesque property is sometimes rented out in its entirety, but it’s often possible to book a room for a few nights to live out the fantasy of a leisurely existence in the French countryside. Le Galinier comprises an original farmhouse and several outbuildings set in a pretty park with a swimming pool, a pétanque court, and rose gardens. Despite the old-world air, there’s nothing fussy about the place — the grounds have a charmingly wild, slightly overgrown look that feels just right, and the air is fragrant with lavender and verbena.
Rooms and suites follow suit with thick walls, terracotta tile or wood-planked floors, linen sofas, and simple wooden furnishings. Some have exposed stone walls and vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, others have fireplaces and antique writing desks. A loft-style apartment has three bedrooms and a kitchen, as does the freestanding Maison du Chef, which opens onto a private garden. There’s little intervention from the staff, whose discreet presence adds to the feeling of being in a dreamy vacation home instead of a hotel. But breakfast served on a sunny stone terrace, and complimentary bicycles for exploring the area, are the perfect touches.
