February: Our Most Exciting New Hotels

Every month, the hotel specialists at the MICHELIN Guide share their top discoveries from around the world

1. EASTWIND LAKE PLACID, Lake Placid, New York

Sister to the Catskills original, Eastwind Lake Placid takes the brand’s signature Scandinavian modernism to one of the Adirondacks’ most iconic destinations. Here, you'll find the visual simplicity that's expected from Scandinavian design – but also the kind of cosiness that’s essential to a Winter Olympics destination.

2. CHÂTEAU DE VAULT DE LUGNY, Vault-de-Lugny, France

In the heart of Burgundy, at the northern edge of the Morvan nature reserve, is a castle whose earliest roots can be traced to 1120. This is the Château de Vault de Lugny, a fairy-tale 17th-century aristocratic residence that’s sacrificed none of its opulence on its way to becoming one of the region’s finest small luxury hotels.

3. ACE HOTEL TORONTO, Toronto, Canada

Ace’s first hotel in Canada is set in Toronto’s Garment District, close to downtown and innumerable local attractions. It’s a new build, but one with plenty of vintage inspiration. Designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects and Atelier Ace, the curvaceous brick, concrete, and wooden forms feel retro-futuristic. It’s unique, but still Ace.

4. H10 CUBIK, Barcelona, Spain

H10 Cubik begins with a refurbished modernist building in the centre of the city – an emblem of Barcelona’s adventurous architectural spirit – and takes it one further with colourful, vibrant, contemporary interiors by designer Lázaro Rosa-Violan. The result is a hotel that stands out, even against stiff local competition.

5. OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT, Thalpe, Sri Lanka

With a name taken from a poem by Edward Lear, the Owl and the Pussycat wears its literary inspiration on its sleeve. And if you were to imagine what a modernist Sri Lankan boutique hotel dedicated to a Victorian eccentric might look like – with a direct view onto the Indian Ocean – you’d be on the right track.
