A visit to the Japanese art island of Naoshima is a treat no matter where you stay, but an especially pleasurable destination is Naoshima Ryokan Roka. Recently opened as the island’s first luxury ryokan, it’s the perfect spot to relax after exploring Naoshima’s art museums and site-specific installations. The suites’ interiors are modern-Japanese in style, with earthen walls, pale wood paneling, low futons with tatami mats, handmade paper screens, and floor-to-ceiling windows facing views of peaceful scenery. Each comes with an open-air bath. Unsurprisingly, the hotel doubles as a gallery, and cultural events bring in the art world set to its stylish bar-restaurant and minimalist firepit.
