Frank Gehry made an indelible mark on the Los Angeles skyline with the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2003. It makes sense that the legendary architect’s first hotel project in California is located directly across the street from his deconstructivist masterpiece, its sculptural stainless steel facade on dazzling display from the tenth-floor lobby. The Conrad Los Angeles, with its sprawling rooftop terrace and infinity pool, is an urban resort with serious design credentials and an impressive modern art collection to match. Even the lobby bar, crafted from glazed 11,000-year-old molten lava, is a work of art.
London-based Tara Bernerd & Partners warmed up the building’s stark interiors with pale wood flooring, lush greenery, and earth-toned decor, all bathed in sunlight through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Rooms are bright and airy, with geometric oak paneling, natural linen walls, and custom-made furniture, and many feature sweeping views over downtown. Spacious bathrooms have walk-in rainfall showers, and some suites come with sleek sofas facing the Hollywood sign and the sunset. Chef José Andrés oversees the Spanish-inspired San Laurel for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with open-air seating overlooking the concert hall. Other highlights include the luxurious spa, a chic rooftop bar for poolside drinks, and of course, the attractions of DTLA just steps from the front door.
