The FUFU brand is well known in Japan for its modern interpretation of the ageless ryokan tradition, and Hakone is well known as a little slice of mountainside paradise less than an hour by train from Tokyo. Put them together and you get FUFU Hakone, a 39-room escape that’s as fine an example of the genre as you could wish for — calming vistas, comfortable and handsome interiors, lovingly crafted kaiseki dinners, and healing hot-spring baths. Here there’s a twist: the waters in the public onsen are from a source high in exfoliating sulfate, while the in-room baths are served by a chloride-rich spring for moisturizing effect.
