If you’re running an upscale hotel in a quaint medieval village on the Côte d’Azur, there’s no sense in trying to reinvent the wheel. Go ahead and give the people what they want: history, elegance, antique furniture and free-flowing wine. That’s what you can expect at Chateau Le Cagnard in Haut-de-Cagnes, a place that’s served as inspiration for Renoir, and a getaway for the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Greta Garbo.

If these walls could talk. In the Guard Room, on the ground level, a dramatic fireplace dates to the 14th century, while a more contemporary fresco — “contemporary” meaning 1928, in this case — adds a whimsical touch, the elephant motif standing in contrast to an otherwise formal setting. Upstairs, each of the 28 guest rooms is individually decorated, and named after one of the many artists associated with the region. Hand-painted details, heavy drapery, and period furniture abound. But the hardware, from the heated floors to the stone sinks, caters to the contemporary traveler. Many suites have balconies with views of the sea and of Cap d’Antibes.

For all its reminders of the past, Chateau Le Cagnard also has one foot firmly in the future. The hotel’s restaurant has a retractable roof that opens to the sky, an ideal place to bask in the glory of sun and sea over a leisurely glass (or bottle) of Bandol Rouge. Outside the chateau, the winding streets and alleyways of the village await — just think of all the sidewalk cafés waiting to be discovered — and beyond, the sea, and all of Provence. Nice is nearby, and a variety of other lovely places that have inspired artists and poets. But you could also just stay inside the walls of Chateau Le Cagnard and experience the region’s charms, pas de problème.

Please note: Narrow and pedestrianized streets prevent direct access by car to the hotel's main entrance. Taxis may be directed to 81 Montée de la Bourgade. Several parking options are available within walking distance of the hotel.
