Refugium Lunz
Refugium Lunz occupies an old house that dates back five centuries. The owners, a pair of Vienna-based architects who happened to be walking past on a winter night in 2019, fell in love with the place, and the rest is history. Many of the house’s original features remain, including exposed stone walls, vaulted archways, wood-beamed ceilings, and large fireplaces. But the owners’ professional savoir faire shows through everywhere, the building’s historical charm infused with a modern, minimalist touch and an emphasis on fine craftsmanship — so much so that the hotel won a German Design Award in 2024.
Rooms and suites are simple but luxurious, with pale wood flooring, crisp white bedding, and large mirrors reflecting ample natural light. All are unique: one has a private sauna, one has a yoga deck, and another has a private balcony overlooking the river. Just as inviting are the common spaces, from the heated outdoor pool and garden to the warmly lit Salonküche, the open-all-day kitchen where guests are welcome to sip a glass of wine while waiting for freshly baked bread to emerge from the oven. Bicycles and hiking equipment are provided, as is a great selection of books; depending on the season, it’s a wonderful place to explore or do nothing at all.
