Beniya Mukayu
That classic experience means a serene immersion in a tranquil natural setting, along with a more literal immersion in the onsen baths — there’s a private outdoor hot spring bath attached to every room — as well as a lavish multi-course kaiseki dinner. This place is tranquil to an almost comical degree; a library features volumes cataloging the property’s varieties of vegetation and mosses. There’s no reason why a bit of modernist furniture should take anything away from the mood — and if Western architects are still using Zen metaphors to explain the appeal of minimalist interior design, Beniya Mukayu is proof that the two traditions are even closer than we think.

This is a small ryokan so it felt intimate and serene. The room was large with a sliding door which opened onto the deck. The private mineral bath was comfortable and well screened. The bed was comfortable. The restaurant provided personal service. The multicourse dinner was amazing both nights. The western breakfast included salad, fruit, eggs, several juices, coffee etc. It was wonderful! The spa provided me an excellent facial experience. My husband enjoyed his massage. We made sweets with a lovely woman in town. All in all it was a 48 hour event not just lodging. The owner welcomed us and said goodbye. The fall color and moss garden was beautiful.
This Beniya Mukayu Ryokan was a highlight of our honeymoon. Everry detail was thoughtfull and positively added to the experience. Besides, the food was amazing, one of the best meals we had in Japan. Combining everything with the onzen we left feeling refreshed, uplifted, and with a clear mind. I would highly reccomend it for couples.
A truly extraordinary venue. Sheer perfection. We stayed at the Japanese Premier Tatami Garden View Room (Sabisyu) and cannot wait to go back. Every meal at Kaiseki Horin was spectacular. Optional wine/sake pairings were thoughtful and unique (particularly the M. Chapoutier "Sazeranne" Hermitage with the Noto beef hot pot, and Tedorigawa Mangekyo Junmai Daiginjo with the sashimi selections). Service at the restaurant was the same as from the hotel: both peak hospitality. The baths were serene, gorgeous, and health regenerative. While both were stunning, the Gensei was my favorite of the two. We signed up for the ikebana activity and it was both fun and inspiring. The libraries were also great spaces to spend a few hours reading, but it was the fourth-floor library (Library Zero) housed one of the most extraordinary art pieces I've come across in years. Much more can be said about this ryokan, but the long and short of it is simply that this is a space to experience at least once in life.
The whole experience was exceptional. I enjoyed a two hour Japanese body massage and facial that was great. The outside hot tubs, , both private in the room and communal (by gender), were so relaxing. The 8 course dinner was yummy and the flexibility to have either a Japanese or western breakfast was very good.
