Though its name may sound fanciful, Izumo Hotel The Cliff is intended quite literally. It stands not atop a cliff but in fact within one — its eight rooms are carved bunker-like into the cliffside, and each one is given a perfectly framed view out to sea from its own ultra-private recessed balcony. The interiors are a minimalist mix of brutalist raw concrete and delicate woodwork, and the amenities are luxurious without feeling extravagant. The hotel’s restaurant, on the terrace above the guest rooms, offers a more wide-open panoramic view of the Shimane coast, and serves dishes crafted from seasonal local ingredients.

We booked a three-night stay at the “villa” at Izumo Hotel The Cliff in June 2025. We weren’t quite sure what to expect and ended up having one of our best ever hotel experiences. The villa is, in fact, a single family house built in a modern architectural style complete with steel beams, lots of glass, exposed structural concrete, and is overflowing with modern amenities. It’s also built right on the top of “The Cliff” and has a beautiful view for miles out over the ocean, plus its own private driveway, its own private backyard, a full modern kitchen, generous bathrooms upstairs and down, and a comfortable living room and dining room. It also comes equipped with a backyard jacuzzi and a wood-fired authentic sauna - both of which we used every night. The service was impeccable, the staff was perfect, and the hotel’s own Italian restaurant was quite upscale with its own incredible views. We wanted to move in permanently, which is the ultimate compliment. And the prices were crazy reasonable by international standards. You’ll need a car here, but we can hardly wait to visit again!
