It wasn’t so long ago that hotels like this were mainly a phenomenon of a select few major world capitals. (You know, places like Dublin.) But now news of the boutique-hotel revolution has reached southwestern Ireland, and in fine style, too. On a hill high above Cork’s city center is the Montenotte Hotel, an 18th-century estate transformed into a very 21st-century luxury boutique hotel.
In the Montenotte’s case this means a contemporary design update that’s playful and eclectic but still respectful of its setting. Bold colors and graphic elements liven the stately old house, and there’s a light, whimsical edge to the furnishings, which marry classic silhouettes with vivid contemporary prints. And if the rooms aren’t enormous — this is a 200-year old mansion, not a suburban office park — they’re certainly more than comfortable enough.
The Montenotte’s gardens are a particular highlight, as is the Panorama Bistro & Terrace — both take great advantage of the hotel’s elevated perspective. There’s a health club as well, with a 20-meter pool, a gym, and a sauna, steam room, and a jacuzzi, and treatments are available in the Bellevue Spa. And, in what’s quickly becoming a luxury-boutique must-have, the Montenotte comes with its very own cinema, a well-appointed screening room that’s available for hire in addition to its regular programming.
